James Cook Hospital, South Tees
The redevelopment of the James Cook Hospital has created a super-hospital with over 1,000 beds and including regional speciality centres for spinal injuries, cardiac services and cancer services. The completion of the redevelopment allowed consolidation of the Middlesbrough General and South Cleveland hospital on to the original site of the South Cleveland Hospital. The success of the construction phase was based on sequencing of the works on a zonal basis, allowing decanting of departments into temporary or newly built accommodation while refurbishment or demolition took place. In total over the four year construction phase there were over 80 separate decants and departmental handovers, with the hospital remaining fully operational throughout. Facilities management and hotel services are provided by over 900 staff, many of whom TUPE transferred to Carillion. Carillion continues to provide a comprehensive range of facilities management and hotel services to the hospital.
